'91 Aerostar AWD? Why does the drive shaft have very strange bolts at the rear?

The four bolts that connect the drive shaft to the differential at the rear require a very unusual wrench or socket. Is there a good reason for this, or can I replace them with four standard, hardened hex-head bolts?

12 point bolts are made of Grade 8 steel. And they are quite common. The reason for 12 point is the closeness of the universal assembly. You can replace them with the standard 6 point bolt but it may be too wide to get a socket between it and the universal joint housing.
