How to take care of a Parakeet?

So, I bought a new parakeet yesterday, and woke up to find him dead at the bottom of his cage. He was just a baby (the lines on his head were really close together). He wasn't really "active" but would sit on my finger and "sleep". I thought it was just his personality, but I guess not, we're guessing he wasn't active cause he was sick. (The guy who worked at the pet shop also stated they just got the birds in the day I got mine/ they are all babies.)

Anyways, I went back and got another blue parakeet this morning. Is there any special fruit I can feed it, like Strawberries? And how can I teach it to talk? In other words, what are some neat tricks I could teach it besides getting on my finger? Links appreciated.

You can feed your parakeet strawberries. They also enjoy eating apples, bananas, grapes, apricots, peaches, pears, cantaloupe, and watermelon. Some veggies you can feed your parakeet are broccoli, corn, carrots, peas, zucchini, spinach, yams, and sweet potatoes.

Avoid feeding your parakeet avocado, chocolate, caffiene, the pits or seeds of any fruits, apple cores, mushrooms, onions, rhubarb, and any high-salt foods. Those are toxic to parakeets.

Male parakeets have the ability to talk. However, not all of them will talk. Females rarely, if ever, talk. It takes several months of training for them to speak. Short, frequent training sessions work great. Start out saying easy words like "hello" or "pretty boy". Reward your parakeet with some millet when it says a word. That will get him talking even more.

I'd highly recommend taking your new blue parakeet to an avian vet to make sure it's healthy. Since you don't know why your other parakeet died and you got this new parakeet from the same pet store, there's a possibility the parakeet you died could've had something contagious. You don't want your new parakeet to become ill and die like the other one, so take it to the avian vet for an exam. That way you can rest assured that it's healthy.

You can feed him almost any kind of vegetables and fruits EXCEPT FOR ABOCADO AND CITRUS´ SEEDS, and also de obious things like chocolate, sweets, etc.

To teach him to talk, just keep repeating the word over and over; it is easier when they are young. As for other tricks, just make a certain sound/word everytime he does something you like until he realizes that the action and the sound are linked, then he will obbey the command.

    Good luck.
