How can I boost the range my USB wireless network reciever?

I have a cord I can use as an extention, would using the cord and wrapping it in a bunch of tinfoil help? Any ideas to boost the range just need a little bit more.

Update:

I can't change the router because I'm connecting to an internet down the street

Is it impossible to re-locate your wireless access point, (router, antenna, hub etc.)? If not, then try moving it towards the area you use your computer, sometimes a a few feet and making sure that there are no obstructions makes a big difference.

    Try using an amplifier.

You could also look at upgrading your network equipment. You might move from a 802.11B to a 802.11N network. You haven't specified which you are using.
