Chad Knaus cheating again??? Martin's team too?

48 and #5 cars 'too close' in tolerances at R&D center? UPDATE 2: Claire B. Lang reported on Sirius Satellite NASCAR Radio Channel 128 "Dialed In" show Thursday night that the #48 and #5 Chevy's teams of Hendrick Motorsports were told they cars were too close to NASCAR tolerances at the NASCAR R&D Center in Concord, NC this week. The cars were taken to the R&D Center after Jimmie Johnson won the Sprint Cup race at Dover in the #48 with Mark Martin finishing 2nd in the #5 Chevy. Lang says she heard the teams were told not to bring the cars back to the track. Lang asked NASCAR if this was true and was told: "The 48 and 5 were brought back to the R&D center. We've been doing this since the inception of the new car as a part of routine post-race inspection. We bring the winner and a random pick back to the R&D center after each event. While both cars passed post race inspection, we informed the 48 and 5 they were extremely close on some of the tolerances."(10-1-2009)

UPDATE Word circulated Wednesday night that NASCAR had found issues with the #48 Chevy as well as the #5 Chevy during inspection at the Research and Development Center in Concord, N.C. The two Hendrick Motorsports teams currently sit atop the points standings. The buzz within the NASCAR community suggests that the offset on the tail, which helps the rear of the car stick to the ground instead of spinning out, of the #5 Kellogg's Chevy just made the tolerance. NASCAR allows a tolerance of 0.070 of an inch for the body off of the center line of the car. Suffice it to say, JJ's #48 car didn't make it. But by how much? NASCAR claims it was .006 over the tolerance. That's about the thickness of two sheets of copier paper. Others in the garage hint at a charitable disposition on the part of the sanctioning body. So how did NASCAR view the situation with the Hendrick cars? "The 48 and 5 were brought back to the (Research and Development Center)," according to a NASCAR statement. "We've been doing this since the inception of the new car as a part of routine post-race inspection. We bring the winner and a random pick back to the R&D Center after each event. While both cars passed postrace inspection, we informed the 48 and 5 they were extremely close on some of the tolerances."(in part from FoxSports)(10-2-2009)

UPDATE2: NASCAR has warned Hendrick Motorsports that the cars of Jimmie Johnson and Mark Martin came very close to failing post-race inspection following their 1-2 finish at Dover last week. The two Chevrolets owned by Hendrick Motorsports came within less than an inch of surpassing the tolerated measurements on the body of their cars. Martin is currently leading the points, and three-time defending series champion Johnson is second in the standings. The crew chiefs for both drivers say they weren't cheating, and in-race damage may have caused the cars to creep toward the maximum allowances. NASCAR is not penalizing either team, but they have been warned.(Associated Press)(10-2-2009)

Reminds me of the car Gordon rolled into the All-Star race with in 1997. NASCAR said it was legal, but don't show up with it again.

Its a heavy price for sure but last time he go suspended for something similar Jimmy won the championship. The real big hit is that 25 driver points and 25 owner points. I think that would put jimmy in dead last starting Phoenix with approx -23 points if my math is right. I am sure the 48 team can make it in on speed and they do have the championship provisional so he will make Phoenix but is he now a Go or Go Home driver being out of the top 35 in points. Jimmy better use some of that Magic he has if he wants to make the chase. However I think chad at the shop is pretty good for the 48 team he will be refining the HP out of the new fuel injection and setting the cars up for all the races.

There's no such thing as "almost'' cheating, or "almost" failing. You either do or you don't. The 48 and 5 PASSED post race inspection. They explained it this afternoon on Speed that the allowance is like 7 sheets of paper, and they used up 5. If you ask me, that shows brilliance that they are able to measure up to the thousandths and be ACCURATE. A little goes a long way with this car. It's called being savvy, not cheating.

It's sad that the media is drawing negative attention to two race teams that did nothing wrong. If they had not passed inspection, then they deserve the negative attention. But, the way it stands, the focus of the media should be on the chase.

I'll confess to despising Hendricks up front!

I see it this way. No team has been caught cheating more than the 48 team. So when Nascar and the 48 do anything it looks very very bad!

The way the rule is set up is the problem. Its like pit road. The speed limit is 55 mph, but we have a 5 mph window so 59.9999mph. Unfortunately for people like me HMS is awesome at pushing up to the 59.999 is fine! In fact it gives you an advantage over guys doing 55mph. Using the example in the article they would have been measured 59.9930 mph (70 thousandths under the limit) which is incredible engineering and provides an advantage. HMS knows that 59.9930 is technically in violation but they also know they have a safe window to break it in.

Think of driving down the highway in a 70mph zone, as long as you aren't doing 80-85 most cops don't care. Its the same thing!

This story is a NASCAR problem not a 48 and 5 problem!

That being said I hope all HMS cars end up in a crash by lap 5 every week!

The cars were within tolerance. So no penalties. Nascar does not want this chase being decided by point penalties. So they issued the warnings. Crew chiefs get paid to find speed. Chad Knaus is a master at it. It is Nascar's job to make sure he and every other crew chief run cars within allowed tolerances. I don't see cheating at all. I see two teams battling for a championship, pushing but not exceeding limits. With the level of competition the way it is today, I think that's why they are championship caliber teams.

do you guys actually read the articles or pull info you believe makes a case? martin was very close but within tolerances. vickers was on tv stating he didn't have a problem with it. while, i'm not quite as eager to support knaus, nascar apparently didn't believe them to be out of tolerance either since there was no penalty. this year isn't tainted except in your head. i guess it will give you something to complain about 5 and ten years from now. apparently this 'cheating' is now rampant since jr. made the front row in qualifying. i'm thinking it's the other teams who aren't pushing the envelope enough. nascar does penalize teams during the chase. it happened to mark martin a few years ago when he finished second to stewart in the chase. quit looking for black helicopters.

As much as I hate Hendrick motorsports, I have to say that Mark and Jimmie were not cheating. The officials just warned them that they were very close to cheating and they don't want the chase to come down to penalties.

I heard that also on Sirius radio.. I knew they would do nothing just warn them. Nascar wants Jimmie to get his 4th so Cale Yarborough's record will be broken. Seems like Ole Cheating Chad is still up to his ole ways, it would be cool to see cheating, keep Jimmie from getting his 4th in a row, I'd be LOL, heck I might even do a back flip. I'm a fan of Jeff Gordon and Dale Jr.. I will never be a 48 or #5 fan.

    Go Dale Jr

If the cars were within tolerance, what is the big deal? Why even issue a warning if they passed the inspection. No cheating at all. The cars were WITHIN tolerance. Give me a break.

  • 1 decade ago

The news release was about the warning..

I don't see what the big deal is about..

And if anyone wants to accuse NASCAR of rigging things,

I'll be glad to listen, but not to the arguments I've heard here..
