Are Top Contributors a good thing?

Question

Can anyone tell me how someone can become a top contributor, just because they have answered so many questions, regardless of the fact that their answers may be stupid, with a very low percentage of top answers.
I think askers take more notice of answers, just because of the top contributor status and may be very misguided, which can do more harm than good, if wrong advice is followed.

I agree. Becoming a top contributor does not magically make you an expert on the fabric of life. Too many times have I seen a top contributor post complete bull and get the best answer simply because they're a top contributor.

I am a top contributor in a couple of areas, and that is a result of getting my answers chosen as the best answer.  I try to look at all questions that I have knowledge and I do rate them either as high or low.  I see a lot of people that answer questions that have already been answered correctly, I try not to do that.  If it is a top contributor and they give an incorrect answer, then I rate them low.  I see many good answers that are rated low, because people have been misinformed and they vote on that basis.  If you know that an answer is incorrect then rate them that way.

It doesn't really bother me, even when a supposed top contributor talks total cr@p about a subject I am an expert on, although I once had one who answered AND tried to make my perfectly correct answer sound like it was wrong.

It does get abused, in as much as some top contributors are definitely no more than people who can google well and apparently have 24/7 to sit at their PCs.

There are more worrying things in this universe :-)

That annoys me too.  They should get rid of the feature or have the badge based on a majority vote (by asker, not by users).
