electric guitar pickups.?
hi.im playing guitar for 9 months now and i own a dean playmate.
this month im going to buy a epiphone ltd 1966 sg-400.
i know that putting good pickups in crappy guitars is a bad thing to do.
so is that sg-400 still a crappy guitar to put in emg 81/85 cuz i really like sound of zakk wylde and that hard rock sound (im playing it a bit).
or i need Better to put p90's in it cuz i like that Classic p90 sound too.
most of all im playing alternative but overall i play everything.
so which of these better to put in that guitar.

What?! Putting good pickups in a crappy guitar is the best thing you can do for it!!! Not a bad thing at all (who the **** told you that?)!
With electric guitars, the most important characteristic of the overall sound are the pickups. Wood type is just preference, and any can sound good depending on what you do with it. But pickups are so important! If you take a crappy guitar and put good pickups, good tuners (though there are ways to wind strings to compensate for even bad tuners), reliable pots, a good bridge, and set the action and intonation appropriately, you suddenly have a great guitar. So yeah, the best (and cheapest) way to get a great guitar is to buy a crap guitar and modify it.
Anyway, put any pickups that you want (that will fit). Though personally I'd go the P90s... overall the best kind of pickup there is. Thick sound but still single coil so get a nice cut and aren't muddy. Humbuckers, to my ears, are very limited (fine for soloing, crap for most everything else, imo) and sound way too muddy for most uses. But again, that's just personal preference.

Hi there!
I think Roy answered your question fairly well before (I assume this is the same question from earlier). The two pick ups have similar, but distinctly different enough sounds that you can lean more towards a heavy metal sound or a less heavy, but cleaner rock sound.
You may also want to try using one of each. Try the p90 up front and the emg in the back. Be sure to play around with the coil taps too. That should give you a few different sounds to explore.
And upgrading the pick ups in your guitar is not a bad thing. The Epiphone can be pretty decent if the truss rod is set up properly and the intonation keeps your guitar in tune. If you like the feel of the neck shape and the length of the fret scale (ergonomically compared to your hand size), then by all means, replace the pick ups and embrace the sounds of that guitar until you are ready to get another one to expand your sounds and playing possibilities.
Good luck!

It's never a bad thing to replace the pickups on a guitar, as long as it's not a major modification. They can always be removed later.
