Why is older comedy the best comedy?

There certainly are older comedies that are hilarious, for example, Fawlty Towers & Dad's Army. And some so called modern comedians, like Russell Brand, are absolutely abysmal.

But is it really the case that older comedy is generally better than modern comedy? I suspect that this is (at least in part) an illusion caused by our forgetting just how much dross there used to be.

The best humor is when the comedian makes fun of himself by exaggeration and role playing. Good humor does not have to be filthy. The best include Jackie Gleason, Lucille Ball, Carole Burnett, Red Skelton, Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis, just to name a few. I have some of the old tapes of those shows and my grandchildren sit watching them as they laugh and laugh. I often sit through the performances of the new comedians wondering when they are going to say something worth laughing at.

in my opinion comedy shows nowadays are too predictable, like i know what they are gonna say before they sayy it i like the oldies, they actually make me LOL.. in most of the new ones i have about the same expression as a brick most of the time of course not all new comedies are bad in my opinion, but i prefer the oldiess.

It isn't dirty, it has more wit and it appeals to the intellect of the audience. That's why older comedy is the best comedy. Back then the comedians used their brains rather than their mouth....

You have to grow up with humour, so to a certain extent things are funnier if you can wrap them in nostalgia.

Something you find funny at 50 sitting on the sofa infront of your telly with your cocoa, is never going to be as funny as the thing you saw after a night out with all your mates, slightly buzzing with your arm round your partner when ou were 24.

The classics like I Love Lucy, Dick Van Dyke, etc are just good comedy, they did not rely upon dirty jokes or sex to make us laugh.
