ARABIC is the official language of Egypt and the mother tongue of nearly every Egyptian, but I'd also like to point out the existence of two minority languages that have a long history in Egypt.

Firstly, Nobiin is the language spoken by the Nubian People who dwell in southern Egypt. Nobiin is a Nilo-Saharan language so it has no relation to neither Arabic nor the language of the Ancient Egyptians. Only about 500,000 speakers of the language remain, but it is one of the most ancient languages still spoken in that part of Africa.

The other notable minority language is Coptic. Coptic is actually a dead language, but it's still used as a liturgical language amongst the Copts (10% of Egypt's population) who practice a form of eastern Christianity. Coptic is noteworthy because it's a direct descendant of the language spoken by the Ancient Egyptians. So Coptic developed from the very beginnings of written history until the 17th century when it became extinct as an every day language.
