Does FedEx operate with USPS?
I went to a mom and pop mail place to send a letter overseas via FedEx, which ended up returning to me unmailable - in a USPS express mail envelope. Note that the charge I saw on the USPS envelope was half of what I paid for FedEx service. I went back to the mail place to ask what the heck happened, and the proprietor told me something like FedEx operates via USPS. He insisted that the price difference wasn't him cheating me, but that he had to incur some kind of costs for the transaction. This of course smells fishy to me but maybe there's a relationship and process between FedEx and USPS I don't know about. Any ideas about if this makes sense before I go back and chew this guy out?
So they do have a relationship, but why would he have charged me $60 for FedEx service and then used USPS express mail to send it, which apparently cost him $30 according to the stamp?

Yes and no. I was in the transportation industry for 10 years and they all contract with one another. But they are separate companies.
To answer your details, you got ripped off. If the package that it was returned to you in was postmarked from your mom and pop place, then they charged you for the $60 and put the package in the USPS envelope, which is illegal, because they had to open it to do it. Or, it was in the Fedex package still and then placed the fedex package in the USPS package. They made $30 easy off you. What you can do is write a report to both USPS and to Fedex and tell them what happened and ask them to do an investigation, which will force a refund to you. Glad you caught it, because it sounds like they have been running this scam on everyone who sends overseas.
This doesn't explain the package being repackaged in the USPS package. Something happened along the line.

Fedex uses Airbus A-300 A-310 Boeing 727 & 757 McDonnel Douglas Dc-10 Md-10 and MD-11. Contractors for fedex use Cessna Caravans and ATRs. The 727 is currently being phased out and replaced with the 757. MD-10 which areDc-10's but have modified avionics which has a glass cockpit taken from the MD-11.Within the next couple of years we will be bringing in the Boeing 777.

I shop online about 80 %. When Fedex is supposed to deliver they write undeliverable ( no one home). We are at home, no effort was made to deliver! Instead they drop ship it at the local Post Office and leave it for them to deliver( and they will if it fits in our standard size mail box). IF not then we get a notice in our mail box to come to the local Post Office and pick it up, which is not close by, nor are the hours convenient for people who work at night. When the Post office told us why they don't drop off our package, they tell us that they are not allowed to go through a "closed Gate",we have an automatic gate which opens if you push the 1 and only button on the box. We have the gate so if one of the horses gets lose they can't get out in the road.So we have to drive to our Post office and retrieve our package , or they will return it after 3 days! We pay for delivery to our door, Fedex does not need a signature or anything, they can just leave it on the porch if they want to, But it works out great for Fedex and the Post Office to have us pay for delivery to our door, then have us drive down and get it! I don't know how to stop it , I am considering a "Class Action Lawsuit against the USPS and Fedex. I get tired of doing their work , paying them for something they don't do. Gas isn't free as far as I know? Also on Saturday by the time our mail person comes by and delivers a notice in our box, it's after the Post Office is closed and we can't get our delivery till Monday.

Yes, USPS and FDX do have a contract; they pay us a few dollars and we put it in our planes to because evidently they cannot afford it and to remain affordable or @ least significantly cheaper.
If you can, always go directly to the stations whether it's FedEx, UPS or USPS. Go straight to the source! Those mom and pop places always charge an extra fee to cover their expenses like location lease and so on. Next time go straight to the source. There are also FedEx Kinkos/office and UPS store and Post Offices themselves.
What that guy did was rip you off, you wanted fdx and he gave you usps. It's like you ordering jack and coke but he gives you jack and kirkland springfield or shasta with that.
If I was you and had the time I would take it as far as court on TV. I think they give you room and board and spending money, gimme a cut, lol. But call your local police station and see what they can do about it. You might get your money back and free service, you never know.

The USPS and FedEx have had a business relationship for several years. The USPS uses some of the space on FedEx's airplanes to transport their Priority and Express Mail. It does not have its own fleet of airplanes (like some people would like to believe). The USPS also uses commercial airlines to transport the mail.

FedEx Smartpost delivered my vacuum to the local Post Office - they do not deliver to home addresses and so - it was returned to Walmart. FedEx cannot accept a PO Box for delivery -the post office here in Truckee, CA cannot accept a street address for delivery. so there we go - my vacuum will probably be outdated before it gets back to Walmart - what a total waste of time and when it comes to customer service on behalf of the post office - FORGET IT.

I do believe that FedEx and the postal service have an operating relationship. It's not that long standing, but I began to notice FedEx pick up boxes in and at the P.O. a couple years ago.
Go to USPS.com to see if there's further explanation there.

Yes they are in together. Check fedex's website.. Its called smartpost. when a package is returned it also incurs delivery charges. For future reference use Kinkos to ship anything fedex.
