How do I get a Violation explained ?

I've found a couple of related questions in the archives, but they were more airing frustrations than proactive.

I got a violation notice last week for an answer I'd given in Homework Help. The poster handed us an essay question; I replied that we couldn't do the entire essay for her, but gave her some leads on how to find the answers.

I replied to the violation notice, explaining what I'd done, and asked for a clarification on how I'd violated forum standards. I got a form reply that stated simply that Y!A had reviewed the case, and the reprimand was allowed to stand: in other words, ignoring the content of my message. I wrote back, pointing out that they hadn't clarified anything, and asked for a cognizant response within 72 hours.

Perhaps it will be no surprise to this forum that I've heard nothing in that 72 hours. Does anyone have any tips on how I can get through to a functionally literate human being to resolve this? The same thing happened the last time I was on Y!A, about 2 years ago -- and is the reason I left. I can find another forum or two where my efforts meet with better manners, although the audiences are smaller.

It's a shame, too -- since I recently made "Top Contributor" in three areas and I now show up on the Leaderboard for points.

So it goes.

Update:

Thanks for the suggestions. The Y!A search engine turns up nothing under "How to appeal a violation"; either the engine fails, or that topic has been deleted 8-? .

I did respond directly to the abuse handlers; we'll see whether that brings a functional response.

Thanks for the support and encouragement. However, I need to hold Y!A accountable for the community they define. I moderate a community myself, and I know the care it takes. By my standards, Y!A did not exhibit that care 2 years ago, and it's (apparently) still lacking.

If Y!A still chooses to follow this lack of basic courtesy, then I'll simply go where the standards of etiquette are more to my liking. I'm not going to fight Y!A to build this community the way *I* think it should be: it's their community, and their choice of standards.

Update 2:

Here is the text of the violation mail

Violation Reason: Misuse of the question and answer format

In Yahoo! Answers you must phrase questions in question format, and your answer must attempt to answer the question. Question

Yahoo is not going to give more info. If you have the violation e-mail post it here with the questions "Why is this post a violation?". The experienced users will help.

Based on what you have put here, the asker may have reported you for a "non-answer". If the question was very specific with a specific outcome requested, then your hints can be declared a non-answer. You have to be careful as some students will report you if you do not do their homework completely. They are within their rights, since you are not answering the question they posed. For questions like this, you just have to skip them and let them learn their "lessons" themselves.

Click on FORUM at the left side of the Y!A Home Page. Post the Violation information on the Forum. The community will explain what you need to do to win an appeal. They will also explain how you can avoid Violations in the future. There is even a post "How to win an appeal".

Never waste an appeal by asking what you did wrong. Just explain that you did not break the rules.

Here are some good things to think about before you hit the SUBMIT button for your answer.

If you post a response, it must attempt to answer the question being asked. (Your answer ^^^ was borderline but possibly OK)

If you don't know the answer, don't answer.

If you don't like the question, don't answer.

Yahoo never "clarifies" their decisions. Even if you wait 72 hours.

Was it the question about King Arthur? if so, you answer could of been written a bit better, not leading off with "do your own homework" that always ticks the kids off and gets you reported by them. Probably if you had written it like this, "I couldn't find twenty things but i I did find this site that should really help you." something like that...lame, i know. But answers should always be written as trying to help. You actually were, just the first sentence was wrong.

As for appeals, its kind of hit or miss there. I've gotten a few when trying to steer posters to the correct section for their question. One I won, one I didn't. both were basically written the same way!

I would almost e- mail the poster, if they allow, ad explain that you felt she was better served to find things on her own, instead of having others do her homework...word it nicely of course! LOL But that's just me!

Please don't leave again, just keep plugging along here, there are those of us who do appreciate decent answers.

All anyone has to do is click on Report Abuse and you are off. This happens all the time even if you violated no rules. I don't think the people who run this site even care so why should we? The names at the end of a violation expanation are females so I wouldn't expect much.

Unfortunately Yahoo doesn't choose to give any real specifics when an answer is deleted. Strange they expect us to show respect for other members which of course most of us want to do but in many cases they don't show respect for us.

Simple you did not answer the question by providing the facts asked for. That is called point gaming

If you did not want to or could not answer the question then you should have ignored it.
