Although we have had some African Popes, we've never had a black Pope, in the sense I think you're asking. I am aware that a very black, African, Cardinal, whose name escapes me now, was strongly considered as a Papal candidate when Pope John Paul II was still alive, and I seriously thought, especially since Pope John Paul II was the first non-Italian Pope we've had in centuries, that this black, African, Cardinal could or would be elected Pope, but, as you can see, it didn't happen. Pope Benedict XVI was very close to Pope John Paul II throughout their theological growth, and I feel that was a main reason for the election of Cardinal Ratzinger to be Pope Benedict XVI. I always thought the election of the black, African, Cardinal, whose last name begins with an "A" I believe, would have been an excellent Pope, but, who am I to know all that is involved in God's Papal choice. God Bless you.

Not referring to color
Black Pope
A nickname for the superior general of the Jesuits. Used because he wears a black robe and rules over the largest religious order in the Catholic Church.
Hans Kolvenbach, SJ, is the current Black Pope.

Not in the sense that we think of it
but don't be surprised to see an african/asian pope very soon!
the Catholic movement is very strong in both Africa and Asia, and it is slowing down in europe. Its only a matter of time before a non-european pope is appointed

Yeah there has been three...
Pope Victor I (189 to 199)
Pope Miltiades (310/311 to 314)
Pope Gelasius I (492 to 496)
They were from Africa, but I don't think any of them were black.

The Roman Catholic Church does have a black pope but it has nothing to do with skin color.

Possibly.
I cite the roman occupation of carthage, egypt and the gibraltar straights as my source of inspiration.

In fact, yes. There had been some African Popes.
One of them was a Berber. None of them was of black race.

My African American Studies history teacher told us there was one.
But he was a little biased though so I'm not sure.
