Dell C600 ATI drivers won't load!?
I'm very experienced with computers, but I've finally found one that's got me stumped.
I reinstalled Windows XP, and now I can't get my ATI Mobility 3 drivers to work on my Dell c600 laptop . The C600 Drivers and Downloads page only has Win2k drivers. Maybe that was my first mistake, because I went ahead and downloaded the Windows 2000 drivers, (after all, XP is Win2k-based, they should work, right?)
So I ran the ATI driver setup.exe, and clicked Accept, Next, etc. and then... I get an error, "Driver not Found!", I click OK, another error window appears: "SEVERE: Setup was unable to complete the installation. Try to setup your display adaptor with a standard vga driver before running setup."
Probably the weirdest part of all is even though the DirectX Diagnostic (dxdiag.exe) detects the standard vga.sys driver, the Device Manager does not. It doesn't even show a Display adapter of any kind. See screenshot: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2583/3988046861_3a6... Is there an IRQ conflict?
So I figured it's the chipset driver that needs to be installed first in order to install the video adapter. At that point I went to Intel.com and downloaded the chipset driver. (440BX Mobile AGPset). I got an error when I tried installing it: "the current operating system supports the Intel chipset devices on your system. No INF update is needed"
No update needed? :S That's crazy, does anyone have any advice, please?

In the screen shot (Device Manager) there's also a PCI Simple Communications Controller with a yellow question mark. That's the IRQ conflict, I think... how do I check IRQ?
And why won't the Intel chipset driver load either? "No INF update needed." (See above for full error).
I'll try CNET as well, thanks for the suggestion. :-)

All of the Dell computers come with a COA sticker (Certificate of Authenticity) from Microsoft. It will have the type of Operating System and the installation serial number.
If your COA shows Win 2k, then that is what was authorized by Dell to be used on that system. If you have a Win XP sticker, then contact Dell and ask for the location where you can download the drivers.
You might try this though: http://download.cnet.com/Video-ATI-Mobility-3-Mobi...
I have a tendency to TRUST Cnet.com downloads...
Hope this works for you.
