How long would you have to drive an overheating vehicle for it to damage the engine?

Say if your vehicle overheats for only a few minutes and you fix it immediately, would damage have already occurred?

It really depends on how hot it got. Damage occurs based on heat and the time the engine spent exposed to that heat. If you noticed it immediately and shut it down, there could be minimal to no damage. If it was only a few minutes (less than 5) you might be okay.

Yep. Head gasket will go almost immediately - from there you can crack your head, block, warp the decks, fuse pistons to cylinder walls...fuse bearings to journals...
