Is 6x-x=5x (because x is 1)?
If there is an understood exponent of 1 on the x, would you get 5xif you took x from 6x? I have done this problem several times and am still getting the wrong answer, i think this might have something to do with it. Thanks!
6x+3-x=15x-8+x (the answer is 1, but i cant figure out how they got there)

X is not necessarily 1, however it could be and often in mathematics x will refer to the x co-ordinate on a graph. However, x is a variable and its value changes. The important thing here is the number of x you have.
If you have 6x and take one x away you have 5x. In the same way if you have six apples and take one apple away you will be left with five apples.
For the lower question ( 6x+3-x = 15x -8 +x ) you simply need to work out what so many X equals, so that you can work out what one X equals.
To do this, simply move all the values of X to one side, and all the numbers to the other by adding / subtracting.
6x +3 -x = 15x -8 +x
5x +3 = 16x - 8 (cleaning up)
11 = 11x (-5x from both sides, and add 8 to both sides)
11/11 = 1 so X = 1

6x+3-x=15x-8+x (combine like terms)
5x+3=16x-8 (add 8)
5x+11=16x (subtract 5x)
11=11x (divide by 11)
1=x
