6 week old with terrible gas!?
My 6 week ols baby boy has been having trouble with gas ever since he was born. We switched him to Good Start Soy Plus (I am lactose intolerant and the doc said that could be the problem). We switched his bottles to Dr. Brown's (which reduced fussiness for about a week), he gets Mylicon gas drops at every feeding (doc's orders), he gets burped every 1/2 oz, and we massage his tummy. Nothing is working. We even took him to the ER yesterday because he was spitting up and passing gas like crazy while crying. They just told us to upper the dosage of Mylicon which didn't help. He's in constant pain. He also eats frequently... 3oz every 2 hours or on demand and his bowel movements are soft and frequent so constipation isn't the problem.
So my question is... Has anyone ever been through this? What age was your baby? Was there anything that helped? Was a health problem causing it? Did they grow out of it?
Help I need suggestions. I've tried everything.
For your information... he is lactose intolerant I switched his formula 3 times before my doctor said to put him on SOY! And read the back of the gas drops box... they are safe for infants, even newborns! Not just one doctor told me to, even his doctor said it was fine. Thank you for the suggestion, but get your facts straight before you rant.
i've tried feeding him more milk, but he only eats 3 oz.

It sounds like he's got Colic. My son had problems with gas when he was just newly born, but with some Infacol (colic medication) he was fine. Ask your doctor about fennel tea, i've known a few who've used it for really bad colicky babies who don't respond to colic or gas medication and it's worked wonders. You could also try other gas medications to see if any the others have an effect on him. I had a quick read on the internet and peppermint is supposed to help too, but i'd ask the doctor first.
Don't listen to the user who said medication is bad, it is recommended to give them it, why wouldn't you want to help your baby when he/she is in pain? Plus, like you said, it's fine for newborns, the medication doesn't get absorbed into the blood stream, it just comes back out with the wind.

Why in the world are you giving a 6-week old medication.... shame on the doctor and ER people!
Buy some peppermint oil, fill a saucepan with water, set on the stove, turn burner on, wait until water boils, drop in a couple of drops of the peppermint oil, remove the pan to cool to room temperature. Once at room temperature, pour into a small baby bottle and feed to your son. The peppermint oil relieves the gas and will soothe his tummy. He may burp a lot but he will finally find relief and sleep.
Then, find a different formula for him...it appears the soy upsets his tummy. Just because you are lactose intolerant does not mean he is.

You are feeding him a lot, so that could be the problem. Try to feed him about 8 oz every 4 hours. That is how much my kids had and they never had that problem. Hope he gets better soon!
