Potential problem with hitch type bike carrier....?
We're looking at getting a hitch type bike carrier for our SUV, but I was curious to know if the carrier would interfere with the back up sensors when the vehicle is in reverse. Thanks for your time.

Wow that is a good question. If no one that has your type of SUV to answer you from experience, you better ask your dealer service department. If they don't know call customer assistance for the manufacturer.
If you can try the rack at a local bike shop, slide it in your hitch, hang a couple of bikes and back up and see what the sensors do.

I don't think you will have any problem. You should be able to disable the sensor if it does interfere. It only activates in reverse and would be useless if you were towing anything anyway. The bikes will reduce your clearance to the rear and depending on the back up sensor could find you smashing your bikes up against something.
