How often should i change my motor oil?
I'm a new driver, and I bought myself an 09 Mini Cooper S a month ago. How often should I change the motor oil? And does anyone have good recommendations of a type of motor oil? Thanks.

the oil gets full of carbon and minute metal filings as the engine wears. that's why you put clean oil in. this carbon and stuff can gunk up stuff inside and lead to premature wearing of the engine.
There are 2 basic types of engine oil. 1)oil for older cars 2)oil for newer cars. The newer types of oil have a "detergent" quality to them that cleans the crud outta the engine and deposits it in the oil filter. This kind of oil literally cleans the engine as you go and the engine lasts longer. Clever eh..
So you can see that with new type engines ( like yours ) you must do 2 things.
Change the oil at the intervals recommended in your manual.
Change the oil filters regularly
Changing the oil filter should be done as religiously as the oil changes. You can't clean the crud out of dirty oil with a blocked up oil filter..
Oil is cheaper than engines. I do an oil change every 5,000km. If i'm driving hard in a dirty place ( this is outback Australia here ) I change the filters then as well. Usually i'd do a filter every 10,000km. Check your manual
If your Mini is supercharged/turbocharged, it will run hotter and you should stick to manufacturers oil recommendations strictly. Phone the Mini parts joint and ask the dude. Never use cheap oil filters ( stick to genuine or name brands )
Source(s): buy the filter changing tool and learn how to change it properly. get an oil pan and learn how to change oil. Get a decent spark plug spanner and change your plugs at no more than 30,000km intervals. If you don't learn how to do anything else on a car, these things are the basis to modern car maintenance. - milton bLv 71 decade ago
You should change the oil every 5000 miles. You can change the oil more often and your engine will last longer but the difference will probably not be significant. You should use the weight and type of oil recommended in the owners manual. Any major brand of oil will be fine for your car. You should also change the oil filter when you change the oil, again, any major brand of filter will be fine. Another overlooked item is the air filter, dust is abrasive and it can cause wear in your engine. Changing the air filter when it is dirty can improve the performance of your engine and prolong it's life.

The Mini comes from the factory equipped with Castrol Synthetic motor oil and that or Mobil 1 is suggested by Mini for oil changes. Your Mini comes with 3yr/36k free maintenance and the oil/filter changes are 10k intervals under factory recommendation.

3000 MI.
Mobil 1 synthetic oil.
The more often you change the oil, the longer it will last.
You could go to 5000, but it depends on your driving.
If you do a lot of city driving / short trips, I would change it more often.

Always follow your owners' manual guidelines for oil changes. If you are looking for a recommendation for a great motor oil, I would recommend Amsoil 5W-30. I get a great 33.5 mpg highway with my 2002 Toyota Camry 4 cyl. and my car runs super smoothly with the Amsoil 5W-30 in it. Your Mini Cooper has a crankcase capacity of 4.5 quarts, just FYI.

If you really want to protect it use mobil 1 synthetic oil and then change the oil every 6 to 7 thousand miles.

Every 2 to 3 thousand miles and our truck has over 300 thousand miles on it and uses no oil. Runs better than most of our friends newer vehicles..
