Go to a bookstore. Find books like yours. Look inside the front pages to get the publishers' websites. Follow their submission guidelines to the letter.

Some accept e-submissions, others do not. Just follow the guidelines.

Do not think that a small publisher will be better. They have higher overheads, produce fewer books than the big houses and have to be pickier. The rule in publishing is start at the top with the biggest house you can find and work your way down.

To find an agent: Look up websites of writers with work similar to your own. See if they mention who reps for them. A short polite mail asking if they can recommend an agent is not out of place. Do not tell them about your book, that's seen as poor manners.

Obey YOG'S LAW: "Money flows TOWARD the writer."

This means NEVER pay to get published or to enter contests or pay a fee-charging agent. NEVER. Obey Yog's Law and you won't get ripped off.

Go to the 808 section of your library which has all the books on writing. They will help you steer clear of the rips.

Writer's Market 2010 will be in the reference section. It lists all the commercial publishers and what they're looking for.

This site is a SAFE writer's board run by pros. It is free and they can help you stay clear of the sharks in the publishing pool. They have a memories and bios forum that can help you.

You don't start shopping your book around until you've gotten solid feedback on it first. AW has a Share Your Work forum where other writers can give constructive crits.

Feedback, beta readers, polished, and re-polished, a book has to be the best you can make it before you send it out. I thought my first was ready, but two years of rejections and rewrites taught me better.

    STAY AWAY FROM PUBLISHAMERICA.

You are in their target market and ripe for plucking by those *******s.

They are the BIGGEST ripoff site of them all. They say they're free and don't want your money, but that is a LIE. You end up buying overpriced copies of your own book!

They will not put your book into a store--but lie and say that you are supposed to do that. Most writers submit their book, and whether it is good or horrible, it's quickly "accepted," (they take everything!) and then you never hear from the poor writer again. Your rights are tied up for seven years!

Just google "publish America" + "scam" and find all the writers who got ripped off by them. They are what is called a "print mill." you don't want anything to do with them. They ruin lives and careers.

If any publisher or agent advertises on Google, it will only lead to a scammer or a vanity house. A real publisher or agent doesn't advertise!

Get Strunk and White's ELEMENTS OF STYLE. All writers have that book and use it.

If you make a serious effort to shop your book you may be able to sell it, but don't be in a hurry. Unless you've done something amazing that a publisher thinks will make them a profit, it will be slow going.

If you just want a few books to have in hand to sell / give to family and friends, then you can try Lulu.com. It's a no upfront cost self-publishing venue.

You upload your book, its cover, and can print them one or one hundred. They use Print On Demand tech, meaning a book is printed only when it's been ordered. You get a storefront on their website and can choose your price to sell above their print costs.

But bookstores do NOT stock self-pub books. The only distribution you have is when someone looks you up on Lulu.

Again--avoid PublishAmerica. Better to self-pub than go with them.

there is extra than a number of suggestion from adults, so i'm going to describe this in my viewpoint as a 14 3 hundred and sixty 5 days previous. first of all, actual everyone seems to be sturdy. Write the e book first. this is the not elementary area (and ensure which you do edit edit edit!!). After that, leave it on your drawer for a month or 2 and then verify it returned. there will be blunders which you will have not found out 2 months in the past. this is the component-- we are human beings. little ones will nevertheless advance, bodily and mentally. whether 2 months is a quick time, you will discover out even via your writing which you have nevertheless grown. I wrote a e book while i grow to be 9. Being the perfectionist i'm while it consists of homework, I checked it repeatedly and repeatedly and throughout returned till i presumed it grow to be particularly appropriate. Now, every time I examine it, I snicker because of the fact it grow to be so detrimental and messy. this is the pinch. you think of it is appropriate and you think of you understand each little thing on the time, yet you actual do not. Editors soak up books that appear as if this individual would desire to now not edit via themselves plus apparently like a e book that'll supply the employer extra than a number of money so we are going to submit it. there is no rule against writing underaged. it is jus that the understanding we've and a month from now would desire to be thoroughly distinctive. yet there is no injury it attempting! Be arranged to get rejected ten thousand cases. i've got in no way heard of somebody making it on their first attempt yet. inspite of an agent, you will nevertheless get rejected (my instructor has an agent and she or he have been given rejected 12 cases till now they common, and 12's enormously stunning!) There are a lot of publishing companies interior the U. S., yet word: in case you do not have an agent, enormous residences like harpercollins, random homestead, and yearling won't examine your question letter (the letter you undergo the publishers). additionally, writing a question letter is serious-- make advantageous it is not demanding, determine you're actually not begging, do not exceed extra suitable than a internet site to 2 pages, make advantageous that's a quick short precis, determine you have maximum suitable information (in case you lie then the publishers would desire to experience cheated) and ensure you're doing this on account which you like writing, not via money words are a large component.
