Originally referred to a person from Oklahoma.
In the 1930s on the West Coast, especially California, the term (often used in contempt) came to refer to a migrant who left the South, Midwest, and sometimes, Southeast United States to settle in large numbers to restart their lives in the region's thriving agriculture and manufacturing industries. Most worked on farms, and in the shipyards and defense factories leading up to and following World War II. The Dust Bowl as well as a federal program which took farm land out of production caused many to lose or leave their homes.

There was a song: Okie from Muskogee, by Merle Haggard, 1969, about a person from Muskogee, Oklahoma. Okie is an old slang for a person who lives in Oklahoma.

People who migrated during the dust bowl in the 30s, mostly from Oklahoma. There were a lot of farming families who were forced to move because of the drought. It originally referred to people from Oklahoma but became a derogatory term for poor migrant workers from the great plains, which is about from Texas to Montana

All the poor people that lived in Hooverville during the Great Depression. A lot of them were from Oklahoma but the name quickly generalized to mean everyone that tired to move west.

It refers to people who migrated west during the dustbowl in the great depression. Originally, a lot of people came from Oklahoma but as the midwest became drier and drier they came from lots of different states although they were still refered to as Okies.
