What is the reason behind the jihad being declared by muslm radicals vs the West?

As an Egyptian American and a descendant of two Muslim Americans I think I can give you a perspective. Now I am not a practicing muslim so I really don't know exactly what these radicals are thinking. I do however think it has to do with imperialist polices. Many Arabs see US presence in Iraq is imperialistic. I reach this conclusion because we have the biggest embassy in the world there. Also in the Israel Palestine conflict the USA takes the side of Israel the country that holds the world record for UN violations. To get more insight on the Israel Palestine conflict I recommend Carter's book Palestine Peace Not Apartheid. I think alot of Arabs dislike countries that are aggressive towards them. That is why I think that terrorist attacks are in aggressive "infidel" countries. Like in Israel,USA, Soviet Union. You'll never find them at peaceful countries like Finland or Denmark or Sweden.

Jihad is a big word... means different things at different levels.

It is a Holy war which can only be declared by "Mufitis," and Alims... They r religious leader like Popes or what not.

Then muslims get together and fight together and defeat their foe...

One man can not declare Jihad, it has to be dissuced by 100 of huge religious leader and then it is implemented. And after it is on the go then Mulims fight like Osama and his homies r doing right now!

Omg!!! This is so right... but there r some loop holes to this theroy but the concept is what it comes down to. U hit the vein my friend... they want to retaliate back and r joining these organizations cuaz all the other muslims countries r wips, e.g "Pakistan" is being drone attack and the U.S is giving aid to shut pakistans mouth!

Imperialism, not just from the inception of their hugely divided tribes into artificial nations but merely our infidel presence in the region. This is a hugely xenophobic culture and for good reason as it largely refuses to enter the modern world. There are many exceptions but they remain condemned by the all powerful and vigilant mullahs. What they refuse to accept is the huge wealth beneath their own feet that is largely consumed by infidels that have made them wealthy beyond measure while at the same time satisfying the demands of their own religion that should make them refuse such largess from an ungodly source. Its' not so easy to bite the hand that feeds you but it may remain the only option toward retaining power. Saudi Arabia supplied most of the terrorists and their funding yet we would not dream of accusing them. Instead we attack rogue nations for imperialists reasons.

Now who ever declares jihad is not a muslim because. The jihadist is not allowed to suicide, kill innocent, demolish whereas these self proclaim jihadis do everything. I think it's just envy. The key word in your question is "radical". Radicals are not logical and faith is not a logical thing so when you mix the two you've got trouble.

Not against the west in general. Just against the U.S. and its main "allies" (imperialist competitors and/or junior partners).

Why?

American troops in Saudi Arabia. American dominance in Middle Eastern markets. American support for dictators in Muslim countries who oppress their people. American, British and French support for Israel.

Muslim radicals were hijacking American boats since Jefferson. Their reasons are a bit more ancient and complex than a single factor.
