My laptop's gone crazy a little help here pls?

My taskbar and icons have completely vanished from my desktop. Even the background wasn't there at first but when I went to desktop properties and reset my wallpaper it appeared. No luck with taskbar and icons though. I went to control panel and clicked on Taskbar and Start Menu but it doesn't open whereas everything else does. Pressing the windows logo thing doesn't bring the start menu up as usual either. All minimised windows appear as tiny rectangles at the bottom where the taskbar usually is, and it isn't stopping me from opening any applications except taskbar and start menu properties, *pause for breath* i have windows vista if that helps in solving the mystery. Somebody help!

Update:

By the way, the menu doesn't appear if i right click on the desktop. else i'd have used that option, duh

    Right click on your desktop

"Arrange icons by" > and tick "Show desktop icons"

Move your mouse over where your taskbar usually is and if it appears, right click select "properties" and untick "Auto Hide the taskbar"

If these do not work do a virus scan with AVG and or Malwarebyte's anti-malware.
