Why is my period extended for 5 weeks now?

I have my period for about five weeks now. I believe it's due to stress and significant changes in my diet and exercising (used to eat a lot of unhealthy food and lacked exercising).

I'm a college freshman and am on a diet and work out 4x per week.

I went to the nurse in health services this past week and she said it's due to stress and changes I'm experiencing in college.

My symptoms are rich, new blood flows and a few clotting. I'm confused and stressed out about my extended period!

Why is this happening? Should I take tests? If so, what kind? Is birth control good to take and/or other medicines?

What should I do?
