What is the ideal amount of sand to put in my salt water aquarium?

Just starting a 28 gal. I put some crushed coral and then some live sand. It's about three inches deep. Is that too much?

Basically, the bottom line here is that anywhere from a 1/2 to a 2 inch layer to cover the bottom of the tank should be sufficent

that's what my carton of "API Aquarium Salt" says: "provides mandatory electrolytes freshwater fish would desire to realize height shade and gear. Improves gill function. Promotes ailment restoration." some fish, like guppies, require extremely brackish (salty) water to stay healthful. yet for the main area, aquarium salt is basically a great additive for freshwater fish. Aquarium salt: - prevents fungi and bacterium from turning out to be using fact it makes the water inhospitable to those nasty issues. - makes the water greater 'comfortable' for the fish interior and decreases stress. - complements the effectiveness of maximum drugs. As a usual rule, circumvent each little thing yet organic NaCl. With advertisement table salts, that's often incredibly unlikely which you will locate salt that has no different ingredients. I basically purchase products categorized particularly 'aquarium salt' at puppy shops just to play it secure. A 16oz carton interior of reason low-value besides. i think of it basically approximately $3, and those sixteen ozare going to final me an prolonged time. except you're treating for ailment, the customary dosage is a few million/2 teaspoon consistent with gallon. upload this lots salt every time you put in sparkling water.

Three inches is fine, in that tank remember, you can get a pair of false percula clowns OR 3 yellowtail damsels and a goby, NO OVERSTOCKING. the 1 inch per gallon is very bad with marine, try 1 inch per 5 gallons. Get two hermit crabs and 5 snails and a shrimp for inverts, always remember to cycle!

that sounds about standard. this is a balancing act. your substrate will grow microbes that are good for thee thank. but the more sand the less water. most people use 1-2 lbs per gallon this can be 2-5 inches depending on tank shape

Do you have any thing that burrows? It may need deep sand. You should get marine hermit crabs. I've seen them for as low as fifteen cents on the internet. They make an excellent cleanup crew.

its about right any more and you would have problems with fouling.

and also as long as the filters or fish are not churning it up then it will be ok if you have an internal filter or power filter try not to let sand near the impeller/motor it will wear a lot quicker(start to make a nose then it will need replacing).

    hope this helps
