electroconvulsive therapy works the quickest when you don't have time to wait for a medication to take effect. it's usually only used in suicidal people or people who haven't had success with medications. none of the drugs are "quick" acting... you're looking at 3 - 6 weeks for a therapeutic level to be built in your system.

Many antidepressants actually make people who were just slightly depressed commit suicide.

Check this video about what happened to people on antidepressants.

I would recommend you to watch following DVD that is available online if you have fast internet. It's told by psychiatrists, psychologists and people who worked for pharmaceutical companies. It informs you - beside other things - about side effects that are not often being told by psychiatrists. It also suggests an alternative in the end. When you then make a decision to take antidepressants, you may be better prepared, educated and understand what's going on when you encounter some bad side effects. I would say that these information are actually vital.

The link sounds a little scary - that’s because many antidepressants have suicidal thoughts and impulses as side effects which you can also read on the pack of some antidepressants.

There are not really any conventional drugs that will rapidly reduce depression. Unlike anxiety or pain where drugs are available to provide a rapid reduction in symptoms, severe depression with suicidal ideation would typically require hospitalization. And (depending on regional law) it is possible for a person with extreme risk of suicide to have ECT (even without consent) due to the fact that it has more than a 95% success rate and its effects are almost instant (it is not like what you see in films). And that would only be used without consent if there were no other options and the situation was dire. There are medications that can rapidly reduce depression and occasionally they are used as a stopgap measure. The primary drugs are stimulants, amphetamines (Adderall, Dexedrine) and methylphenidate (Ritalin). They are also used in people with severe refractory (treatment resistant) depression who fail to adequately respond to conventional drugs. But due to the significant risk of abuse these drugs have they are rarely a first choice except in certain situations such as severe cancer or AIDS. And there is a drug that can quickly reduce depression but it is almost never used. It is Tramadol, a pseudo-opioid. It has some minor actions like morphine but it is also chemically an SNRI class antidepressant that acts instantly. It can be abused due to its minor opioid actions (but rarely is) and because it is classified as an opioid and used for pain it can be risky (legally) if doctors prescribe it for depression.

Lexapro was created just because of the 3-8 week problem. It is reformulated Celexa, I believe. It acts in about 4-6 days. Suicidal folks get committed to the hospital, as a general rule.

If you are feeling like you want to hurt yourself, call someone, or go to the emergency room.

Well I have Borderline Personality Disorder and I was prescribed Prozac for my low moods. It takes a few weeks to kick in, but it worked really well for me! I suggest talking to a psychiatrist.
