Do you think car mechanics up the price on repair if a woman went to get a estimate?

It's not just women, they jerk people around who appear to kn ow nothing about cars, men or women. Most of these guys work on some kind of basis where they get a bonus for how much service they sell, so it's not necessarily their fault, I mean, what would YOU do, especially in this economy?

I guess it would depend on the mechanic any place you take a car they're gonna try to get you to get extra junk done or other services so they can make more cash wether you're a guy or girl and i suppose if your a girl or even a guy who seems to not know his way around a car very well they may try to exagerate the seriousness of some of the stuff they want to do your best bet is take your car a few places compare prices and ask questions you could even question some of the stuff one mechanic said with the next until you find a mechanic you feel comfortable with doing business with because at the end of the day you have the final say on who gets your business.

Redcorn not sure because no squaw, and no professional mechanic... but will hazard guess... to answer question.

Me thinks it depend on where you go.. If it large chain of repair facilities or actual service dept. at a car dealership me doubt this happen... but me thinks when you get into smaller place who do this work, they will be more likely to up the price whenever, and wherever possible... and no sure that depend on gender so much as it depend on whether mechanic think he can get away with it based on person in front of them... meaning man or woman if person no know nothing about car repair, then they will take advantage..

Yes, this is a true statement. It's a good idea to go to a mechanic with your boyfriend,husband or another male family member. Or, if you have e female friend who knows about cars, take her, and watch what happens

i am a guy but yes it is true because they have done it to my mom before so that's why i repair the cars here that my house now so then i don't have to have some one Else do it

No, I think they do men the same way.

When I go in I tell them I don't have much money before they give the price. I go and talk to the mechanic first before I talk to the lady at the desk. Sometimes they go in and change the price for me.

Unfortunately some mechanics exploit people's lack of mechanical knowledge and raise their prices. Women are prime targets but these mechanics try it on men who they think are easy marks also.

Yes, its happened to me. They gave me an estimate then when I got my fiance on the phone, the price went down. Then when I told them I would check elsewhere, the price went down again. They just try to see what they can get away with.

Only for people, men and women, who haven't a clue about cars. It's just not about women all the time.
