Low pressure sodium lamps will emit dim pink/red light when turned on and then bright yellow after the sodium heats up.

High pressure sodium lamps will emit dark pink when turned on and then pink-orange light when warmed up. These are the most common.

Metal halide lamps are a true white light, but less common because of their low efficiency compared to sodium lamps.
