Parrot Perch and Chewing Behavior?

Hello fellow bird lovers.

I need a perch for my senegal parrot. He keeps chewing through his wooden ones, so I was thinking solid sanded or cement. I have considered sanded covers for his wooden perches but think he will destroy those as well. Any suggestions on types or best places to buy?

Also, any suggestions on the destructive chewing behavior are welcome. I have tried giving him other things to chew, but he prefers the perches.

Thanks. :)

For Most birds chewing or nibbling is a normal behavior. All birds will chew on one thing or another. Does he have a cuddle bone in his cage? he also could be trying to shorten a beak that is to long. if he is otherwise healthy I would guess the above may be the reason.

Birds beaks do continue to grow like a finger nail would on a person.

They should be cut *By a Vet* periodically to prevent them from getting to long and preventing the bird from eating properly. Their toe nails should be

    kept trimmed as well.

As for perch covers, they are ok but are too , a temporary fix. once he reaches the wood he will chew that.

They say that you should offer several different types of perches and different thicknesses so that your bird will have different textures to keep his toenails short and just a change in them.

as for cement perches, I've never used them so maybe someone here

will have an opinion on those.

If you're really concerned, maybe you could ask your vet what he thinks. maybe he would answer that quesition over the phone.

Have you thought about using natural wooden perches, instead?

These are definately my preferred perches- and they are free!

As long as you dont use any woods that are toxic to your bird (I think some fruit trees, pines, etc- are- but I am not an expert on this)

It should be fine- and much safer than resulting to cement perches that can cause your bird harm.

I do not like the store brought perches at all- including those doweling ones that your bird is eating through.

In nature- your parrot would be sitting on a variety of different textured and sized perches, and not the same one all of the time. These doweling perches can damage your bird's feet.

The sandpaper covers are a waste of money and can cause your bird harm- especially if he eats it.

The coloured mineral perches tend to dye white birds- so I hate to think of what they contain and the possible health hazards they might cause.

I think that its great that your parrot is chewing- it keeps the beak in great condition and your pet entertained. There are a heap of toys out there that encourage foraging and chewing- these might be the right ones to select for your Senegal. Good luck!

Here is the thing with parrots...they like to chew. Part of owning a parrot is realizing this fact. It is always good to provide your parrot with lots of different perches...wood, acrylic, cement, sanded, etc. Don't use just one type of perch. Acrylic perches are going to be your best bet because they are pretty much indestructible...but more expensive. But in the long run you save money. However, again...don't give your bird only acrylic perches.

Source(s): Also own a senegal parrot...and lots of other parrots

Go to a pet store and buy a Mataza perch. They cant chew it up. Also you can give them a branch off of a Bottle Brush Tree

    no concrete

he could slip and scratch his toe

(happened to my bird, vet bill was exepensive!!)

you should wrap it around with a cushion that is hard but not too hard to hurt the bird.
