Longest Straight Road?
Just curious. Anyone have an idea where the longest straight stretch of road is in the UK? (Forget the ups and downs, otherwise the answer will be about two miles!)
When you can drive down it without turning the steering wheel.

--The world's longest road without bends is in Saudi Arabia, the road connects Harad area with Badha on the UAE boarder. The road is about 260 km, 160 miles, and at night you can see cars coming on the opposite direction from very far distance. But when you drive, watch for camels that cross the road.
Australia - The "90 Mile Straight" nearly 1,000km to the east of Perth on the Nullabor Plain, Australia. This road is 90 miles or 146km long and while it goes up or down a bit, following the contours of the land, it does so without any bend, kink or deviation.
And
The record for the longest straight section of railway in the world (478 km) is the Trans-Australian Railway, upon which runs the Indian-Pacific passenger train that crosses the Nullarbor from Perth to Sydney via Adelaide.
http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_the_worlds_longe... ----------- The Pan-American Highway begins in Alaska. It passes through Canada the United States and Mexico. Then it continues down the West Coast of South America all the way to Chile. Altogether, the highway passes through 12 counties. It passes through jungles and mountains, the road is approx. 16,000 miles long. At this time, only one 54 mile stretch of the road remains to be completed. http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_the_longest_stra... -------------------------- Longest straight road in the world?
Here's a challenge Where's the longest straight stretch of road in the world?
I've come up with two candidates:
Number one is Highway 46 in North Dakota, USA. It's apparently 123 miles in length and runs from Streeter to Hickson. However, a web page describing this road says: "Every "straight" road shifts a little bit here and there, bending just a bit around a rock or a tree or making an adjustment to cross a bridge. So does Hwy 46. But this road has a reputation, and it should be held to a higher standard. With this in mind, the best that offers -- its longest straight-as-an-arrow, lock your steering wheel and take a nap stretch -- extends nearly 31 miles, from Gackle to Beaver Creek. Compared to 123 miles that doesn't sound like much, but it's still impressive, especially for a two-lane blacktop."
My second candidate is the "90 Mile Straight" nearly 1,000km to the east of Perth on the Nullabor Plain, Australia. This road is 90 miles or 146km long and while it goes up or down a bit, following the contours of the land, it does so without any bend, kink or deviation.http://forums.govteen.com/showthread.php?p=3400158 ------------- Images of Longest Straight Road http://images.google.ca/images?hl=en&source=hp&q=L...

You discounted Russia because the majority is "forested and uninhabited"? Why does that make it unlikely to have the worlds longest straight road? It doesn't hold the record, but your reasoning is a little strange The longest road without bends is a 90 mile stretch of the Eyre Highway in Australia, which passes over the Nullarbor Plain

Hi John V.
The A15 is a major road in England. It runs north from Peterborough via Market Deeping, Bourne, Sleaford and Lincoln along a variety of ancient, Roman, and Turnpike alignments before it is interrupted at its junction with the M180 near Scawby. The road restarts ten miles (16 km) east, and then continues north past Barton-upon-Humber and over the Humber Bridge before terminating at Hessle near Kingston upon Hull.
According to the AA, the route is 95 miles (153 km) long, and should take 2 1/4 hours. Norman Cross - Bourne takes 33 minutes, Bourne to Lincoln takes 46 minutes and Lincoln to the Humber Bridge takes 54 minutes.
A section of the A15 provides the longest stretch of straight road in the UK.
Or I should say that, one of the longest virtually ruler straight, visible, sections is the 53 km (33-mile) stretch of Ermine Street from Winteringham, on the Southern side of the River Humber, to Lincoln. (The present day B1207 and A15 follow its course).
Regards.
