IP address of laptop connected by WIFI?

Hi, we have a PC connected by cable, with two laptops on WIFI. Mine is fine. My husband's won't connect. He has been away on business and it appears the laptop has lost the right IP address.

When we checked his laptop it has the same server numbers etc as mine, the only difference is the last two numbers of the IP address which are different. Should they be the same? We have tried to find the address automatically, we have also rolled back to a previous date. Which initially connected, then this afternoon it went off again. When you check the connection it says connected and the signal is good.

HELP what are we doing wrong?

Any help would be appreciated.

Update:

Sorry the PC and his laptop are Windows XP

Update 2:

Hi Andy thanks for that. It does work on free WIFI. The IP address allocated is almost the same the last two digits are different. Not sure what DHCP is, I'm not very technically minded but we have checked everything against the main PC and my laptop and the only thing we can different is the IP address - last two digits. I'm ready to throw the thing through the window!!!!

Update 3:

Hi Jaypee,

thanks for that when we get the black screen do we type in the c/: prompt win?

Update 4:

Thanks to all of you for your help it's much appreciated

-If the laptop is running thru wireless it should be getting an IP address from the wireless router you have there, What brand of laptop- is it a DELL? if it is, try to set its wireless zero configuration. ( to set this up call PC manufacturer OR call your ISP for tech supp)

    - try to release/renew the IP address by using the command prompt

    - start- run- type in cmd press ok

    - black screen/box (C/: prompt win)

    -type in ipconfig /release -enter

    - then ipconfig /renew -enter

**wait for the process to take place and check if the IP changed to a new generated IP add.

If this wont work call ISP**

They should NOT be the same IP, the IP is a unique number.

However I'm thinking this isn't a problem with the IP address. If you have DHCP enabled then the computer should be assigned it's IP from your router, so I'm thinking some setting is messed up. Try taking the laptop somewhere that offers free WiFi and see if it will connect there. That would help narrow it down some.

The IP address MUST be different otherwise there will be a conflict and things won't work. Everything connected to your router (including the router itself) will normally have the same IP address except for the last digit or two digits. The main address is allocated by DHCP by your provider. DHCP is Dynamic Host Configuration Control which basically translates as your router and PC(s) being allocated IP addresses dynamically rather than having a fixed IP address,

Have a look in the help section in the router handbook. Normally you can connect to a diagnostic function on the router by typing in something in the URL line on your browser.

No, you do not need to type "c/: prompt win"

The line in that "black screen" where the flashing cursor is located is referred to as the "prompt"or "C-Prompt". Usually it's something like

    C:\Documents and Settings\YourUsername>_ or just

    C:\>_

Once you get that prompt, you type in the commands specified by Jaypee i.e.

    ipconfig /release - hit ENTER

    ipconfig /renew - hit ENTER

Also: Go into your Internet connections (Control Panel / Internet Connections)

RIght-click the connection that is giving you trouble. Click on the "Properties" button. (There is also a 'Repair' option here that does essentially the same thing as the ipconfig release and renew - you can give that a try)

Highlight "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and click on the "Properties" button.

In the resulting window, make sure "Obtain an IP address automatically" is checked.
