Which was the first country to recognize Bangladesh?

As far as I can recollect at this age with poor memory, it was Bhutan who accorded diplomatic recognitions to Bangladesh as a sovereign country (of course at the behest of India, who was testing the water first asking Bhutan to plunge...lol)

We are grateful to all the countries who took no time to extend their 'recognition' to the newly born Bangladesh that was gasping for oxygen (recognition) when there could have been so many eventualities, if USA could have been led to believe that attacking Bangladesh would be good for its health (economically as well as strategically-like Iraq).

We are specially indebted to Indira Gandhi and India as well as the then USSR who vetoed US-China plan to have Security Council resolution passed to have a cease-fire, which would have gone in favor of Pakistan at that time, since they could have consolidated their lost ground by way of brining more troops & supplies to linger the fight.

Sorry for the long answer, but we can hardly check our emotions if we consider the hardship our nation went through those days and who helped us with men, material and/or moral courage.

Probably India. Here's a list of the first 11 to recognize Bangladesh, in Jan. 1972, a month after independence. Pakistan withdrew from the Commonwealth, over Britain's recognition of B. in Feb. 1972. The US didn't recognize B. till April, the 60th country to do so; China waited till 1975.

It was India on 6th Dec. 1971 followed by Bhutan on 7th Dec. 1971. Poland was the 3rd country to recognize Bangladesh on 12th Jan. 1972.
