You should find out first clearly how the law interpret behave with your boss accordingly.Moreover it depends on your type of job,how responsive you are about your job.More responsibility less chance to go on leave.Another factor will be the bucks you are getting.Think about it and discuss with your boss.

why wouldn't he be telling the truth - even if it was allowed - you have to work when they need you - YOU are not in charge.
