The title of Prince of Wales was sporadically given to the oldest son of the reigning monarch since Edward I. Wales was subsumed legally into England and has long been a principality only in name. Welsh royalty has been English for hundreds of years. (bbc.co.uk)

Llywelyn ap Iorwerth (1173-1240) can be called the greatest of the medieval Welsh kings. In 1205 he married King John of England's daughter Joan. (www.britannia.com/wales)
