Foam board insulation you find at Home Depot, Menard's, etc can be bought in large sheets. It's just a big old piece of styrofoam. Cruise the internet for pictures of tombstones to give you ideas for shapes. Cut the foam board with a jigsaw or large knife. Martha Stewart has a how to here: http://www.marthastewart.com/how-to/tombstone-yard...

The easier way to paint them is to use gray and black spray paint. Spray it gray then lightly go over with black paint to give it an aged look. Rebar (also found at Home depot or Menard's type stores) works well to anchor them in your yard.

make a few ghosts or scary grim reapers out of old halloween costumes (like capes) and place them near the tombstones. I also rake leaves and put them around the tombstones to give it the abandoned graveyard look.

The ultimate thing to do is place body parts (skulls, hands and feet) in front of the tombstones and change them out every few days, so it looks like the dead are crawling out of their graves. On Halloween, I have a dug up hole in front of a few of the graves and dress like I just crawled out of the grave and hand out candy.

Theft of your decorations can be disheartening. I don't bring them in every night. I don't use anything expensive or hard to replace. Keep it well lit and you might discourage thieves. I don't leave the fog machine out all night because that's too expensive to replace.

I find that its often the details that are interesting. Things like moss, upturned earth, and most importantly lighting (if they can't see it, then what's the point?)

Personally, I stop giving candy around 9 and start packing things up, taking all my graveyard props to the backyard. I once had a 400 pound cement fountain stolen from my front yard in broad daylight, so I don't want to leave anything out that could be taken.
