ARMY NATIONAL GUARD at 30 w/ 3 kids?

I'm 30 yrs old have three kids, and a job I hate. Am I crazy for wanting to join, to get an education, and to get a carreir? My wife supports me, but my family & friends think I'm nuts. What do u think? My kids are 11,9, and 2.

I wouldn't join guard.. Go active duty, you will more easily be able to support your family that way.. If you go guard your still going to have to get another job alongside monthly drill

The Army National Guard , which I am a member of is pretty good. They have full time jobs you can apply for. They help pay for school and you can serve your country. The advantage over active is that you an pursue other things and if you want can go active later on. I got a college degree from the National guard and how man other 23 year olds when applying for a job can say they have a college degree and is an Iraq war vet ( 11 1/2 months). Active is great but the option to serve and pursue career goals is a very good deal.

  • I think you should persue what's going to be best for your family. And if that happens to be a career with the National Gaurd, then by all means go for it. A few questions I have is: how long would you be away from your family. Is there a bootcamp or is it a two weekends a month deal? And how long until you notice the fruits of this particular labor? I don't think it is a bad idea, rather one that will take a lot of consideration.

hmm...well if you hate the job you have right now, you definetly don't want to keep working there. A job you hate will only make you more bitter later on. The military DOES offer some good things, like you mentioned, an education. But you'll have to answer your own question, really. Would you be able to go long periods of time without seeing them? And would they be okay without you?

why would you do national guard? you will still be doing that job you hate...active duty will move you on post with a house big enough for your kids, or money to live off post, and FULL benefits...but make sure that you are ready for a military life...i.e taking orders from guys who are way younger than you...

Go for it, and check out the reserves as well if you don't want to go active duty, in the reserves you could go active for a year, go to different schools and such and when you get out of the military, everyone goes to the reserve army not the national guard.

You would still need to work a civilian job. With that many dependents you might not be able to get in. Keep in mind you can deploy. Do plenty of research.

It's something that you have to decide for yourself. I've seen plenty of guys come in who are older than you and do well.
