Someone said the U.S.A. is a state?!?!?!?!?

I told the guy he is f***ing stupid for even saying that the U.S. is a state & he is like a teen that is 15. IS THIS WHAT OUR CLASSROOMS TEACH STUDENTS ABOUT THE U.S.A. THAT IT'S A STATE?!?!?!? MAN, IF SO THEY NEED TO BE FIRED!!!! & TO THINK PEOPLE LIKE HIM WILL VOTE FOR A PRESIDENT!?!?!?

Update:

I was playing my MMO game online & i have this friend that I can't be friends anymore, b/c he said the U.S. is a state.....b/c he said that is why it is called United S-T-A-T-E-S. I told him it's a country. like other countries have names too. I asked where he's from, he said he is from East LA. Then he asked me if I studied up on my History & government? WOWOOOOOWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have told this guy over & over again it is a country NOT a state. He keeps saying its a state. & my favorite subjects are history and government. LOL.....

    I know a 45-year old woman who says the same thing. All I can say, my friend, is thank gosh most of us really ARE at the top of the food chain, thanks to competent teachers and parents who cared.

    Sounds like a question from an ignorant American teen who doesn't know how to look anything up!

    Ever hear of a dictionary or encyclopedia?

    Since you're online you would've easily been able to find the following info in wiki;

    - A sovereign state is a political association with effective internal and external sovereignty over a geographic area and population which is not dependent on, or subject to any other power or state. While in abstract terms a sovereign state can exist without being recognized by other sovereign states, unrecognized states will often find it difficult to exercise full treaty-making powers and engage in diplomatic relations with other sovereign states.

    - A federated state, commonly simply referred to as a state, is a territorial and constitutional community forming part of a federal union.[1] Such states differ from sovereign states, in that they have transferred a portion of their sovereign powers to a federal government.[2] A federated state holds administrative jurisdiction over a defined geographic territory and is a form of regional government.

    - A state is a set of institutions that possess the authority to make the rules that govern the people in one or more societies, having internal and external sovereignty over a definite territory. In Max Weber's influential definition, it is that organization that has a "monopoly on the legitimate use of physical force within a given territory." It thus includes such institutions as the armed forces, civil service or state bureaucracy, courts, and police.

    - The nation-state is a certain form of state that derives its political legitimacy from serving as a sovereign entity for a nation as a sovereign territorial unit.[1] The state is a political and geopolitical entity; the nation is a cultural and/or ethnic entity. The term "nation-state" implies that the two geographically coincide, and this distinguishes the nation state from the other types of state, which historically preceded it.

    Yes, the United states is known as a federal state. Give your head a shake!

    What you probably didn't know is that the USA is actually just a corporation registered in the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and controlled from THE CORPORATION OF THE CITY OF LONDON.

    Dumb and dumber...

    The term state is interchangeable with country. A state such as the United States is a Sovereign state composed of 50 states.(Which are not Sovereign).
