Why do you believe in violence and war?

I served 20 years in the USAF, and a tour in Vietnam. I detest war and I detest violence. Unfortunately, there are dedicated enemies of our freedoms and our way of life. I don't think my Dad enjoyed killing Germans in WWII, and I certainly didn't enjoy bombing North Vietnam back to the stone age. My son didn't enjoy killing Somalian warriors, either. There's no-one in Iraq or Afghanistan that is there for the sole purpose of killing. If Hitler, Ho Chi Minh, Al Quaeda, etc. would have not pursued their deadly agendas, many lives would have been saved. Violence and war are part of human nature. What would you do if a mugger grabbed you? You'd fight back, no?

Because they are a fact of life and not believing in them does not mean that war or violence wont kill me. Its kind of like if I don't believe in gravity, I will still fall off a cliff.
Like most unpleasant things, you avoid it if possible, but you cannot hesitate to use it when left with no choice or the other guy will use them first.

Violence and war is the only way for a nation to defend itself and survive. Just imagine how many of them failed, dissolved among the invaders, disappeared and now we can learn about their culture only in books.

Believe in? As in know they exist? Same reason I believe in the trees across the road. Because I've seen them.

I know of a bumper sticker that can answer this for me,
"Except for ending Fascism, Nazism, and Communism,
WAR hasn't solved anything."
