Why does my grandprix shake when i am traveling at high speeds, and slowing down?

I have a 2004 Grand Prix GT. I recently noticed that when i hit about 75 MPH, or when slowing from more than 30 or so, my car has a shimmy to it. It is noticable at 75, but even more noticable when slowing down, especially when applying the brake to decelerate quicker. My tires are not brand new, but it seems they have tread left on them. I don't have any trouble with it pulling to either side, so hopefully that rules out allignment. I'm not sure.....maybe they need balanced? but would unbalanced tires really throw a shimmy into a drive? I feel nothing loose, it all feels sound to me. Any ideas?

as your suspension wears, the weight of the car "sits" down on it. So even a worn suspension can be aligned properly and be ok ( within limits ).

But with this slight amount of wear, if a tyre is out-of-round, or unbalanced, it will show up at higher speeds ( as the wheel bounces more over bumps ) and when decelerating and the weight is shifting.

you are describing a classic wheel/tyre problem. Get the wheels balanced. If the problem persists it is probably a "bubble" on the tyre. I've had tyres that the tread peeled off of because of manufacturing faults. Change the bad tyres to the rear if you can't afford new ones if that's the case.

your suspension will be a bit worn. plan on getting the front reconditioned within the next 1-3 years depending on mileage and how you drive

If the shaking is related to applying the brake, it is probably warped brake rotors. If the shaking occurs without applying the brake, it is probably tire balance. Either one is easily fixed, once you figure out which.

  • i just had the same problem on my mustang.

turned out after i did my brakes about four months ago,

the drivers side rear brake pad had disinegrated and

was the exact cause for the problems you mentioned.

Source(s): my car runs like new now...hope this helped :)

try front alignment,if nothing maybe loose strut bolts where your steering happens on front.you wouldn't feel it while driving and steering but high speeds only,i had the same problem with my chevy s-10,unbalanced tires can have a big affect on the driving of your vehicle.hope i have helped.PEACE,LOVE,UNDERSTANDING.!!!
