First, go to your high school's guidance counselor's office and apply for a work permit. This is required for anyone under the age of 18 who wants to work. As a minor, you will only be allowed to work a certain number of hours per day and per week. The laws for this vary from state to state.

For a first job, I'd suggest fast food, some restaurant work, or retail. These jobs are relatively easy to get, are known to hire a lot of high school students, and they do not pay the best but they pay at least minimum wage and better yet provide you with invaluable work skills to use towards better, more meaningful employment later on.

Fast food is probably the easiest job to obtain, esp since they have high turnover rate. I have to warn you though: sometimes the work is not very fun. You get busy rushes during lunch and dinner, and many of the customers are rude and impatient to get their food. Many ignorant people disrespect fast food workers. However, remember you are there for the PAYCHECK and the EXPERIENCE, not to care what some lousy customers think of you outside how well you're serving them their food. You cannot let customers get to you personally. Also, some of the managers in fast food aren't the most desirable forms of humanity, whereas others are genuinely nice people that nurture the whole teamwork atmosphere. There are, however, times when you can have fun working in fast food. E.g., these places generally hire teens your age, so it's a good place to meet new friends and possibly a few new dates too lol, and during the down times coworkers will often joke around and try to have fun at work.

Restaurant work is a good possibility too, but instead of getting paid a steady hourly rate, you will be working for tips. Most places require experience and/or an age of 18yrs old+(since 18 is the minimum legal age required to serve alcohol) to be a waitress/server, but you might have a good chance of becomming a dishwasher, host, or busser. (if you're a dishwasher, you will get a steady hourly rate as opposed to tips) From there, you can always work your way up to becomming a server. There are a few places, such as diners that do not serve alcohol, that might hire minors with no experience to be servers though. One warning about restaurants -- I've found that a lot of the smaller, privately owned restaurants will not comply with all the labor laws. For example, they will pay many of their staff members with cash "under the table" -- which can actually be a good thing, since this means you won't have taxes taken from your money. But they might try to pay you less than minimum wage, or try to schedule you hours that you as a minor are not legally allowed to work, such as late night shifts that have potential to interfere with your schoolwork. Just be well informed of your rights as a working minor.

Well at 16 you cant be too picky, I would start with all restaurant jobs to all retail jobs. And trust me someone will hire you... I would first apply at places that are nearby your home then move up from there lol ... The closer the better.. Olive Garden, Jc pennys, Younkers, Macys, Hardees, Mc.d, Taco Bell, Hooters,Tj.Maxx/Marshalls.. Family Restaurants, Whiteys Icecream... some places that I cant think of ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Good luck.
