"Hallelujah" was written by Leonard Cohen. I only have my own personal interpretation of the lyrics, but I'm sure you could do some research on Leonard Cohen and learn more!
Definitely, the most moving version, hands down, is Jeff Buckley! Two others I know who have done covers are Kevin Max and Rufus Wainwright.
Look around for different lyrics, because many of the covers leave out some lyrics from the original that are absolutely beautiful!

It makes reference to the story of David and Bathsheba, and possibly Samson and Delilah as well.
Here is a quote from Leonard Cohen; who I believe is the one responsible for writing the lyrics...
"Hallelujah is a Hebrew word which means "Glory to the Lord." The song explains that many kinds of Hallelujahs do exist. I say : "All the perfect and broken Hallelujahs have an equal value ." It's, as I say, a desire to affirm my faith in life, not in some formal religious way but with enthusiasm, with emotion....
It's a rather joyous song. I like very much the last verse. I remember singin' it to Bob Dylan after his last concert in Paris. The morning after, I was having coffee with him and we traded lyrics. Dylan especially liked this last verse, "And even though it all went wrong, I stand before the Lord of song with nothing on my lips but Hallelujah."

Hallelujah (Hebrew הַלְּלוּיָהּ, Standard Halleluya,Tiberian Halləlûyāh) is a Hebrew word meaning "Praise Yahweh". It is an exclamation used chiefly in songs of praise or thanksgiving to God, and as an expression of gratitude or adoration.

It was written by Leonard Cohen when he was going through a bad time in his life. I saw him in concert last year. Google Leonard Cohen.

It was originally a Christian song about God saving someone - they felt like their life was pointless but they found God and lived for him.
