Never listen to your teacher. I recommend you try to read it. If the language gets to be too much check out the literature network(http://www.online-literature.com/austen/pridepreju... among others for a better understanding. There are so many sites out there to help you understand the humor and social commentary. Also, you can rent the newest film (with Keira Knightly and Matthew MacFayden) to watch and help you through the book. I find being able to hear it and see the expressions on the actors faces can help you understand what is actually going on and what the dialogue means regardless of whether or not the film itself is Oscar-worthy.

Once you read it and can fully understand it, you will probably love the book. It is very funny and hopelessly romantic and it's a great primer for "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies"!

I love the book! The language is alittle complicated, but once you get used to it you won't be able to stop. Tell onething it is so much better than the movie. You should totally give it a chance!
