Outdoor Activities or Toys for Large Dog?
I have a doberman and she looks really bored. That tears my heart out, but every time I try to play with her she knocks me down. (She weighs about as much as I do). My husband normally walks her because I can't handle her size. He hasn't been able to walk her lately because of his work, though. I worry that she's not getting enough exercise even though she can run freely in our very large back yard (about half an acre) every day. Please help. Toys, activities, whatever ideas you have will be greatly appreciated as long as it's something I can do in the back yard. I just want to give her some stimulation. Thanks.

Try playing fetch so that she's not pounding after you but going for a ball. Also, if she ever starts running towards you like she wants to play or pounce, fold your arms and turn away from her when she starts to jump up... ignoring a dog is one of the best tools to use. All they want is attention and affection and if something they do makes you stop giving them that, they learn quickly not to do that thing anymore. This is how I made my very energetic jumpy dog as a puppy stop. Besides fetch maybe you could build a little obstacle course and teach her the way to run thru it. You can use treats and praise to get her to jump over things or run thru something. Keeping a dogs mind active is important and can actually wear them out too.

Have you heard of those toys that run (or scuttle) quickly? Dogs love them. Or playing fetch with her while your sitting down, or if possible a smaller dog that requires not so much exercise, such as a toy dog, as long as your dog likes other dogs and isn't aggressive. You can buy dvds and stuff on this as well as watching a dog whisperer. When I was ill and couldnt exercise my german sorthaired pointer, i put her on the treadmill, she took to it like a duck to to water and ran nearly 2 miles uphill!! It depends on the dog x

See if she likes big sticks, she can bite into it carry it around and fetch if possible put some peanut butter on it to get her interest. Also Kongs are good light and durable toys for her to fetch

How about you teach her some leash manners so you can walk her? You need to exercise her mind as well as her body, training does just that.
