Is it normal for my 4 week old to spit up so much?

My 4 week old nurses every two to three hours but spits up almost every time he lays down. Even burping does not really seem to help. Sometimes he seems to choke on his spit up and it concerns me because he sleeps on his back. What can I do to keep him from spitting up and should I worry that he gets choked so often? He has an appointment on Monday but I am anxious now. Is this normal?

Update:

Sorry, I meant to say he is breastfed.

Maybe he has IBS or some other gastro-intestinal disorder. If it continues for another month or if he seems to be in pain, call your doctor.

Hi there,my son (now 3 yrs old) had this same problem. It is not 'abnormal', but it definitely needs to be addressed. He most likely has pretty rough acid reflux (as my son did) and needs to switch to Soy Milk. If you are nursing him, he may not be able to digest it with his small little belly. I took my son to the ER and they found this out when his own pediatrician did not.

I switched him to regular milk at 1 yr old (ped advice) and he had terrible cramps and diarrhea every time he had a B.M.->until at 2.5 yrs old I switched him myself to Soy Milk and now he has no more cramps and regular B.M. (consistency).

I had to keep him (when he was very small like your baby) on an incline and on his right side when he would sleep because they say that the route to the stomach is straighter and it does not cause as many digestion problems. This is the best advice I could've received and that is why I am passing it onto you. :)

    1. Switch to Soy Formula for a month and see how it does.

    2. When laying down, keep on an incline and on his right side.

    3. Burp Often.

I can almost guarantee that if you try this, it will decrease all of these problems. Remember as well that he may need to be on Soy Milk when it comes time or he will be absolutely miserable!

    Hope this helps!

PS: Sorry so long! :) Good Luck!

It sounds like he is bottle fed - be sure to use bottles that are made to allow for as little air in the baby as possible, like Dr. Brown's.

Also, he may have acid reflux, which is pretty common. Feed him in an upright position and keep him upright for about 20 minutes after feeding. I heard once that when babies spit up, it actually looks like a lot more than it really is.

All babies spit up. A baby may spit up 1 tablepoon, which looks like a lot when coming up. To prevent him from choking, don't lay him down right after eating.

my daughter was like this, her pediatrican recommended putting a phone book or two under one end of her mattress and putting her head on that end to elevate her some, she thought it was reflux, i still do this it helps alot, but my girl sleeps on her stomach so i never worried about the choking issue. I know I know no tummy sleeping but her dr and i talked and she just doesnt sleep on her back. Good luck! :) Also her ped told me she could be over eating but that never seemed to be the problem with her. :)
