Becoming a casting director?

I would like to become a casting director. Right now I'm a freshman in college, and I need to pick a major. I prefer to do something in the Digital Cinema field, and then take acting classes outside of school.

However, my college offers two areas of Digital Cinema. One area is focused on live production, cinematography, editing, and live production (the technical side). The other area is focused on screenwriting.

My question is which area should I go for?

You need to know about the industry and the processes behind it rather then the technical knowledge. CDs spend large amounts of their time working with Directors and Actors, you'd actually be better studying Acting at College to start building up on local contacts and attending showcases etc.

There is a Casting Directors' Guild of Great Britain (I'm British).

Their article on "How To Become a Casting Director" is available at; http://www.thecdg.co.uk/index.php?option=com_conte...

In the USA there is the Casting Society of America. http://www.castingsociety.com/

They may be offer to give you guidance or information on internships which will probably be your first step after graduation if you're American.

This is a career that you stumble upon. And casting is more of a business aspect of making a movie. Majoring in film or digital cinema will not help you become a casting director. You need a strong background in business and you also need to know people in the business. You have to set up your own casting agency because nobody is going to give it to you. And you need to find business through negotiations. You hardly need any film training for this job. Casting directors are business people.

If you really want to become a casting director, you need to go to business school or study law. It has NOTHING to do with making movies.
