    Simplify 9 + 2.5x - 13 + ( - x )

    1) Distribute the - 1 in front of the parentheses (The "one" is not written because it is understood.)

    9 + 2.5x - 13 - x

    2) Collect like terms

    2.5x - x + 9 - 13

    3) Combine like terms

    1.5x - 4

    It's not a question it is an equation.

    9 + 2.5x - 13 + (-x)

    [9 - 13] + [2.5x - x] --> group like terms

    -4 + 1.5x --> simplify

    1.5x - 4 --> the more traditional way to write it...

    Note: this is NOT an equation and you can get marked down on a test if your teacher is anal about it. No equal sign = no equation. This is an "expression." Expressions have no "solutions," but they can be simplified or reduced.

    Just combine like terms

    9+(-13) = -4

    2.5x+(-1x) = 1.5x

    The simplest form of the expression, then is 1.5x-4
