At what age should I start taking my child to the dentist?

Update:

He will be two and a half in December and has no problems. I was wondering because I was thinking about adding him to my dental insurance during open enrollment. Thanks for your help all and I will be making his first appointment for January.

If there are no apparent problems, 2 1/2 - 3 years old is a good time to start with usually very easy fun visits.

Well in NZ you can get free dental care if you are under 18 years old until you reach 18.

as soon as they get their first tooth. The bottle destroyed many of my first sons teeth. the toothpaste said (under 2 years consult a physician) so I didn't use toothpaste on him. he had so many fillings before he could even talk. I remember feeling so bad while he was waking up in my arms, coming out of general anesthesia.
