140 mph speedo swap and?

now the fuel gauge is at 1/2 after a fill up. I swapped out the 85 mph for a 140 mph speedo for my 89 Mustang GT. I filled up at half a tank last night with 7.7 gallons and the gauge only rose a bit above 1/2. I left the car running when I was filling up and when I got home I shut it off and the started it again, the gauge rose to 3/4 and then fell back to just above 1/2. Is there something different with the 140 speedo fuel gauge hooking up to the old harness's of the 85 speedo fuel gauge?

Thanks..

The voltage from the fuel level sending unit doesn't match the voltage from the system that has a 140 mph speedometer. You'll just have to get used to it. Fill the gas tank by mileage instead of the gauge reading.

The fuel gauge in the 140 mph unit requires a fuel sender unit with less resistance than yours,so it will under-read.

should carry a spare 2 gallons with you and then run it empty and see how bad the under-read is.

If you don't have any wires disconnected then I would look at the fact that either your gage cluster may have a issue or you may need to re-flash your ecu I would check the back of the cluster make sure everything is connected all the way.
