what do these little {} brackets mean in math?

    ) is the innermost bracket.

    ] is the next innermost bracket.

    } is the outermost bracket.

    However when people talk about sets like the set with elements a,b, and c

    that set is written as {a, b, c}

    So it serves two purposes, it is the outermost bracket and it is used to define a set.

    It can be an infinite set

    { x | x is real and x is greater than 5}
