I'm looking for buy a new washer and dryer. Has anyone bought one recently? Any suggestions on what I should be looking for? Or things you know about different brands?

I bought a samsung washer and dryer last year. They don't quite have all the fancy features, but I really don't think most of us need all the extra features anyhow. They were priced well, and work well. If you go to sears they salespeople usually know quite a bit about each brand and can explain what each will do. But go shopping with an idea of what you need the washer and dryer to do. If you tend to have large, extra dirty loads, then tell the sales person and they will direct you to the best brands for what your need is. And don't just buy the most expensive or flashy set you can find either. Get what you can afford and will do the job the best for you.

I got a LG front loading washer and dryer set with allergiene technology and steam option (almost no more ironing!). I went to a Sears outlet and got the set for $1500 less than they cost in the regular store because they had superficial dents in spots where you can't see them once they're installed.
I looked for machines with the highest capacity I could find so I wouldn't have to take my comforters to the cleaners anymore and so I could wash my pillows regularly with no problem.
My washer is a high efficiency washer that uses very little water to clean a full load of clothes and it senses how large or small the load is to know how much water to use. It also has an "extra water" feature if you would prefer to use more water for a particular load.
If you use powdered detergent, give it away. It just doesn't work well in these machines. I'm an avid user of Oxyclean and you can't put powder in the dispenser, you have to put it in with the clothes. I can't imagine regular powdered detergent would completely dissolve and you'd probably have residual powder all over your clothes.
I don't use the steam setting on the washer because it leaves clothes too wet for my liking. I use it on the dryer instead.

I owned one and must admit didn't have any problems with it. It also got the clothes dry. It was a Bosch. If you have the room I would get a separate dryer, as people have said, if one goes wrong then you are without a washer and a dryer. If you are going to buy a combination washer/dryer, one word or warning though. I wouldn't economise and buy a cheap one.

I like my new Maytag front loader but I wish I had bought the one with the steam care system! Also, get the pedestal they sit on or you will be bending way down to get the laundry out. Not sure why they're an "option" and cost almost as much as the darn washer!

elisabeth e had a great answer and i will include along her lines again that staying away from all the fancy new electronic upgrades will only have a repairman at your house all the time. my neighbor has one there constantly. i like sears appliances as well as they have never seemed to fail me. good luck! get what you need and no more. you might want to consider something to hold a king size comforter as most top loaders won't handle these so maybe a front load machine will work for you best.
