My car makes a very loud humming noise at 40-45 mph, what is wrong?

I have a 2001 Ford Escort. Recently in this past year I began to hear a really overpowering humming noise when my car's speed reaches about 40-45 mph and I don't know what it could be. My tires are fairly new and the car is in decent shape. I'm really concerned because being that 40-45 mph is a popular speed limit in my city, I have to drive with a loud humming noise and I believe that it is starting to effect my hearing so PLEASE HELP! Also, when I am parked with the car running, my car will be shaking. It shakes a lot and didn't always do that. Any help about either problem is appreciated. Thank you.

Update:

My car doesn't have a loud humming noise until I get to 40-45mph and starting from 40 it's loud then the faster I go it gets louder until I reach 50 mph then the loud humming noise stops.

Could be the motor mounts. Mount mounts connect the engine to the frame of the car. They have vibration dampers made of rubber and after time they can break down. If the car shakes at idle and hums at speed it is most likely your a mount.

If I'm correct your car has either three or four of them. Two up top on the passenger and driver side of the car, and two on the bottom of the engine go front to back.

Stay away from the Polyurethane ones. They squeak after some mileage

Perhaps it is the interaction of the current tire treads with the road. Is something scraping, like worn axles, or worn brakes, or an off-center fan. A shaking car could mean bad gas, or it is way out of tune and running rough causes the shaking. If your rubber engine mounts are worn out this would allow the vibrations of the engine to shake the whole car.

Well the shanking during idle seems to be just a rough idling issue which could be alot of things as far as the loud humming you could try wheel bearing i had that problem recently except on a newer impala.

check the back seat for kids.or left over party goers.

The EGR may be sticking open some.<<<at idle

    I have the same mystery with a 95 F-Explorer<<40-45mph

    The 40mph growl.

    Wheel bearing.

Is it repetitious with speed? As you go faster does it get faster? or just louder?

People sometimes mistake it for exhaust even!
