Authentic North Carolina BBQ?

I will be in Charlotte for a few days, and I am interested in finding the best authentic, hole-in-the-wall, east coast bbq experience. Pork, vinegar, cole slaw, mac & cheese, sweet tea.....all the goodness.

I have no problems with dives, greasy spoons, etc. as long as the staff knows what they are doing and the food is good.

I will be staying uptown but will have a rental car and will be happy to drive for good food.

I researched McKoy's, Mac's, and Bill Spoons, so I appreciate your feedback. I also heard about Sonny's - is that any good?

    This place is truely special. Where in Charlotte are you going to be? this please is off 77 at the woodlawn exit.

    Mac's is another one if you want beef brisket. Right down south blvd. Some folks are going to tell you to go to Bill spoons down south blvd but if you are a BBQ lover don't bother - nothing special.

    Lexington BBQ. You can't beat it with a stick! The chopped barbecue tray with slaw, hushpuppies, and fries is awesome.

    Also, this place is always packed, but I've never had to wait for more than 5 minutes to be seated. And the staff is so friendly and very attentive.

    Initial Q. Stay on the plane. Get off at RDU. Rent a vehicle. Drive East on US 64. Beginning in Rocky Mount ask any old dude where to pig out. Stay awhile. Turn in the rental car. Settle in, BUT don't let on that you're not from around thar!!
